When Is a Fight Beautiful?, or George Bellows’ “Dempsey & Firpo” by sportswriter Michael Palmer was first presented at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation in New York City.
Mr. Palmer says, “Bellows takes the high point of this frenzy and gives it structure. The black glove of Firpo and the black shoe of Dempsey meet in space, and the forms merge in a way that is surprisingly gentle. I think the artist felt friendliness and opposition as one thing as he did this painting.” …
